Toyota plans to throw Avensis into the BTCC ring

Toyota’s Avensis sedan is about to go from docile to delirious with Toyota planning to enter it in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) later this year.

If the illustrations are anything to go by, this could be the most radical Avensis out there. Dubbed the Avensis Next Generation Touring Car racing concept, it’s slated to enter the final round this year of the Dunlop MSA BTCC and will be engineered by the folks at GPR Motorsports.

The BTCC itself is expected to alter some of the rules for the 2011 season, hence, GPR Motorsports will be using a donor car and bodyshell to build the Avensis according to the new rules and regulations.

However, Toyota has firmly reiterated that they have no plans to re-enter the BTCC with a works team and are merely lending their support to the Touring Car Association with the British built Avensis.

Come the weekend of 9-10 October, the Avensis touring car will be getting down and dirty with the rest of the BTCC machines at Brands Hatch and will be piloted by James Thompson, a double BTCC champion.
